Eating Healthy: Making a Budget and Sticking To It

Eating healthy can be expensive, but it does not necessarily have to.

It just takes a little time to plan and stick to a budget.

With a job change looming in my future it is time to get my financial budget in order and what a better time to do it for healthy reasons too.

What am I going to do?

First I will bring back old habits....habits of a time when my ex-husband was out of work due to mental illness and I was not able to work because I needed to be home caring for him and our children so finances were beyond tight. Thankfully my budget will not be that small but using those tools will be a great help.

So what were they?

  • Meal planning
  • Meal prep
  • Using coupon apps
  • Using coupons
  • Shopping sales

Oh boy that looks like a time consuming adventure. It definitely can be.

Weekly Menu Plan

One thing that can help is to keep things simple as possible, like making menus according to season and then reusing them on a rotating basis. Boy do I wish I still had my menus from years past....oh well I move on.

Next thing s to enlist the help of family members in the prepping process. Cutting, dividing, organizing. Put on a little music and have fun with it.

Coupon Apps. These are awesome and they are a number of them o

ut there. Downloading them takes just a few moments and the savings can be great! Can you say free products? YES!

A few I use regularly are Ibotta, Checkout51 and Saving Star.

Coupons can be found in newspapers and online. Key for me with this is to not get caught up in using all of them....just the ones and brands I need.

Sales flyers, I use them when planning my menus and stores run sales in cycles too for the most part and you begin to pick up on them after keeping a grocery journal for a little while so those seasonal rotating menus generally need minor adjusting to gear them towards what is on sale.

Lets step back to the coupon apps for a second. Remember I said "Can you say free products?"? YES! You can not only combine the coupon app rebates with traditional coupons you can stack the apps as well in certain situations which can lead to free products and even saving more than you actually spend. This is my fave thing to do! =) Right next to shopping my fave consignment store and walking out with bags of things I have bought AND the store handing me money.

So what does all of this have to do with making a budget you ask? It ALL goes into me making and sticking to that budget and eating healthy.

Super Bowl Party 2017

And it was over....

Or was it? I was not a fan of either team playing this year in the Superbowl but I watched a bit anyway.

Then got bored....

...and apparently missed quite a good game for the Pat's fans out there.

I know I know I live in the heart of Pat's nation but I am NOT a fan of them. I am a long time Giants fan.

So I was cheering for the Falcons.

And I love the way black and red look together. I am female I like pretty things even in a manly event. But hey I am me and I am loving the me I am finding under all the past I am shedding!

All ready for the games...and eating to begin!!

I made chili as a main dish, but those photos are on my camera...at home. So another day I will share that.

The snacks were delish!

Not all WLS friendly but good I need to make all happy if I can and with snacks that is pretty much a possibility with a little planning.

Here is my plate...all WLS friendly according to my bariatric team....check with YOURS if not sure. I do not police what you eat and I do not want it done to me....thanks! =)

I made traditional deviled eggs, though you may want to try my Avocado Deviled Eggs....oh so so good!!

I made bacon wrapped smokies, a mustard sauce to go with them, cheese crisps and guac. I could eat these food groups each and everyday. They are definitely some of my favorites.

There were also mixed nuts, chips, crackers, spinach dip and cupcakes for dessert.

Great night with loves in my life.

February 7, 1999

Wow! Where has the time gone?!

18 year ago today my beautiful daughter entered into my life.

We had a little rough start....32 hours of labor....then a c-section. Almost killed me literally.

But she made it and so did I.

I cannot be prouder of the woman she has become so far.

She is definitely not the typical teenager, never has been.

She is balanced

and level headed

and caring

and beautiful

and I could go on but I think you get the picture.

OK one more she is a Geekanista!!

So my beautiful girl welcome to adulthood!

I know you will soar and make me and all that have the privilege to know you proud more and more each day! You truly are a gift and I love you always!

On the Go Eating

I have said it before but I will say it again, I am on the road a LOT with my job.

I do try to make and bring my food with me but there are times that is just not a possibility, or I get lazy.

It is those days I try to eat healthy regardless.

Thankfully I have found some good options that are tasty as well.

So welcome to on the road edition of my Daily Eats.


Daily Eats

Breakfast is the same for me no matter where I am...

Coffee with protein added.

I love sushi and I love Trader Joes, wish there was one closer to where I live. There is one however where I work now and again so I stopped in there and grabbed a few things for home and my lunch as well.

As much as I love sushi there is not a whole lot of protein in it and I felt that a couple hours later so stopped at my fave coffee shop and grabbed a snack....along with my coffee.

These are AMAZING!!!

Dinner was home...thankfully

Which was Zuppa Tuscana from my crockpot.

And  side of...

Artichoke! I wanted to introduce my kids tot hem...yes they never had had them. Both were pretty happy with them....as was I.

Later I wanted a crunchy snack....chips would be my choice, but not a good one.

Instead I had this...

Crispy cheese with avocado....my guilty pleasure!
